Hibiscus
Vibrant tropical shrub with large, showy blooms—ideal for hedges, borders, and containers across Jamaica.
Hibiscus thrives in Jamaica's warm climate and adds bold colour year-round. Varieties range from classic red to pink, yellow, and white. Easy to grow and low-maintenance once established.
Care Tips
- Sunlight: Full sun (6+ hours). In Jamaica's intense heat, morning sun with light afternoon shade can prevent flower scorch. Avoid deep shade—blooms will be sparse.
- Watering: Water deeply 2–3 times per week when top 2 inches are dry. Increase during dry spells and flowering. Reduce in cooler months. Avoid overhead watering to prevent fungal issues.
- Soil: Well-draining, slightly acidic (pH 6.0–6.5). Add compost or organic matter. Tolerates sandy soil if amended. Poor drainage causes root rot.
- Fertilizing: Feed every 4–6 weeks during growing season with balanced fertilizer (e.g. 10-10-10) or bloom booster. Reduce or stop in winter.
- Pruning: Prune in late winter or early spring to shape and encourage bushier growth. Remove dead wood. Can be cut back hard if needed.
Jamaica Climate
Thrives in Jamaica's humidity. Watch for aphids and whiteflies—spray with soapy water if needed. Blooms best with consistent moisture during dry season.
